Why are corals colorful?

The enchanting underwater world holds a treasure trove of life and biodiversity, the diverse species of flora and fauna make the seafloor a riot of color. Many consider a staple of the ocean to be the corals that litter the sea floor; after all what is not to like about them. They provide a home for the fishes and they look good.

Do you know that the enchanting colors that corals produce are due to the millions of zooxanthellae, single celled organisms, that live inside the polyps or pores of the corals?




These zooxanthellae that reside in the clear tissue of the polyp produce the colorful pigment that gives corals their signature color.


Does it matter if corals are dying? They are just colorful rocks after all…
